Where does one draw the line on whether the origins of a practice make it acceptable?

ok, am very confused:.

honeymoons and wedding rings, based in paganism, ok for a jw to do.. windchimes, once prohibited due to the intent to ward off evil spirits, ok for a jw to have.. pinatas, once prohibited due to origin, now since folks do not associate the fun with a pinata, ok for a jw to do.. wedding anniversaries, not sure if they are formally addressed in the bible, ok for a jw to do.. birthdays, two bad examples in the bible plus some stories how originally celebrated by the wealthy (choose to ignore job 1 - job 3 when a persons special day is celebrated), not ok for a jw to do (have not been at a birthday party ever where someone was beheaded).

thanksgiving, actually a basis in the old testament for a celebration of the harvest, not ok for jws to do.

You stop letting the WT do your thinking for you , & decide what you want to celebrate and how now.

What customs meant in the past, is past. You may start your own celebrations.

What "lightweight" but delicious foods do you enjoy?

dear hearty appetites:.

my weight-loss and toning-up campaign is proving successful.

giving up a few of my fave foods peculiar to my ethnicity [temporarily because i tend to go overboard] has not been so hard as my current regime of complex carbs, fruits, vegetables, fish and fowl is satisfying.

I don't have any trouble finding soups or casseroles in the winter, I rely on many ethnic dishes for low fat low cal eating.

Salads, grilled vegatables or plates full of fresh corn, tomatoes, cantalope in the summer.

Getting the whole grains in me with out added calories was a chore. I like my bread & butter, can only eat just so much oatmeal.

I started eating brown rice cakes this winter, can't say they are tasty at first, more like styrofoam, definately light. But I'm feeling so much better having reduced my wheat to occasional pasta or small serving of dessert. I am now addicted to Quakers White Cheddar rice cakes. I was never a snacker , my problem was too large a serving size, snacking on the rice cakes , I now am not so hungry and over eating at meals.

I remember my brother ( about 12) finding this name in the phone book when we were kids.

Richard Head, he lived on Gay Street, & got an unlisted number the next year.

I do, obsessive hand washing learned from my mom. I am now downgraded to the normal range, other people don't notice.

I need to load the dishwasher a certain way & always run it full. If I find someone has run it partially loaded , I'm a little flustered. Years back I would have had a major melt down.

Laundry must be sorted my way and full loads only.I can now do a load of a few things if I need to.Only mildly irratated if someone else does a partial or mixed load.

Locking & rechecking doors was also a big problem, but I've over come that.Haven't locked my husband out of the car while he pumps gas in years.Locking the doors bothered him more than finding them unlocked did me.

There were other quirks but it's been so long I can't recall them.

Therapy for PTSD and leaving the cult helped . I don't think their is any harm in these behaviors if they don't interfere with your life.I do think they can be a warning sign something is wrong.
